An intact patrimony... Situated in one of the valleys which have cut the Aubrac plateau, Saint-Chely is a village of character, with a very old origin, and which has always been a stage on the road of Santiago de Compostela. Pieces of evidence of this pilgrimage lie here and there in the patrimony: Romanesque church (rebuilt in the XVth century), pilgrims' bridge classified Unesco World Heritage, and so on. Around the village, farms and burons show the ancestral and unchanged architecture, with basalt or granite walls and the roof covered with lauzes.
Tradition and pastoral happiness... You can attend transhumance, one of the most ancien traditions in the world, firmly rooted in the local patrimony, and which etymologically means “ to pass from a land to another one ”. After the winter, that spreads from November till April, the cattle leaves the valleys to the highlands, that seem then a green sea dotted by cows, the real queens of this country on summer.
Land of culture, adventure and friendship... The Aubrac plateau is situated on the borders of three departments, Aveyron, Cantal, Lozère, corresponding to three regions, Midi-pyrénées, Auvergne and Languedoc-Roussillon. The mountains of Aubrac are between the Truyère gorge in the North, the Lot valley in the South, precisely southwestward of Margeride and southeastward of Monts du Cantal, between Chaudes-Aigues, Marvejols and Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac. This plateau, which extends over more than 25000 hectares, is crossed by many tracks. You will appreciate ancien monuments which go back to the XIIth century.
